HIVE – ZANZI RIG

This page demonstrates how to rig Zanzi using the Hive Auto-Rigger.

Zanzi is a great rig to learn from because it has:
– A biped rig with an extra set of arms
– Simple wings
– Cloth appendages
– A face with goggles, simple hair, and a hinged jaw with a blendshape mouth

Project files are coming soon.

More videos covering the skinning process are coming soon.

The Zanzi character is designed by Kim Allen.

1. INTRODUCTION & PIVOTS

In this first video, you will learn about the objectives of this course and establish the initial pivots for Zanzi.

2. CREATE & TWEAK THE TEMPLATE

Now, let’s start with the biped template and make some adjustments to Zanzi’s fingers. You’ll also learn how to save a template for future use.

3. LEG GUIDES

Learn how to position the leg guides and get helpful tips for automating the foot controls.

4. UPPER BODY GUIDES

Now, let’s move on to the upper body and position the guides for the spine, arms, and head.

5. FINGER GUIDES

In this video, you will learn how to position guides for the fingers. For more complex five-fingered setups, refer to our guide for orienting finger joints.

6. DUPLICATE THE ARMS

You can easily learn how Hive can duplicate and position Zanzi’s second set of arms.

7. BODY CONTROLS

Hive’s control mode simplifies the adjustment of the rig’s numerous controls. Before polishing, it’s important to ensure that the controls are positioned and sized.

8. TESTING THE RIG

Now it’s time to quickly test the rig by polishing it and ensuring that all the controls are operating correctly.

9. QUICK SKIN PART ONE

In this next section, we will quickly apply automatic weights to the character’s skin. In the first video, you will see how Andrew applies the weights to the extremities, including the hands, feet, and head.

See how to install the third party tool Skin Wrangler used in this video.

10. QUICK SKIN PART TWO

Now, let’s skin the jacket, shirt, and legs. Skinning the jacket can be tricky because it’s not an enclosed mesh. You’ll see how you can easily copy the skin weights from the shirt to a selection on the body of the jacket.

11. TEST DEFORMATION & SAVE MASTER RIG

The initial version of the rig is nearly finished and can be handed over to the animators for initial testing and feedback.

In this video you’ll see how to tidy the scene and save a finalized version of the rig, ready for animation referencing. From this point, the rig will be consistently updated, and you’ll notice how referencing the rig allows for the animation to be updated as we incorporate new rig features.

This tutorial will continue. More videos are coming soon.
