HIVE – SKIN PROXY – ASARI RIG

The Asari Model is a wonderful free fan art character model by Laura Peltomäki. Asari is fan art from the Mass Effect series.

On this page you’ll see how you can easily rig and skin Asari’s body in under an hour using the new Hive Skin Proxy Mesh and our Characterizer tool in Maya.

This method offers an efficient way to rig a biped character and automatically apply high-quality skin weights.

Later we’ll apply some motion to the model using the Zoo Tools retargeting system.

Project files are coming soon.

2. CREATE PIVOTS

Here, we will create the pivots for Asari, which will assist in fitting the Hive Skin Proxy.

3. FIT THE SKIN PROXY

Now you will learn how to fit the Hive Skin Proxy to the Asari model.

4. RIG AND SKIN TEST

Now with just a single click, you can rig and skin the character, as the skin proxy skeleton has been matched to Asari.

5. BLENDSHAPE MATCHING

For improved accuracy, blendshapes can be used to better align the skin proxy mesh with the Asari model.

This can help the skin weights and address discrepancies between the character and the skin proxy mesh.

6. RIG & SKIN TWEAKS

Now that the skin proxy mesh accurately fits the Asari model, we will once again rig and skin the character and, this time further tweak the skin weights.

This video shows the Brave Rabbit Smooth Weights tool in action, see how to install it on our Third Party Tools page.

7. CONTROLS & PIVOT ADJUSTMENTS

This video demonstrates how to adjust Asari’s pivots and controls to better match the model.

This video series will continue when we apply motion to the rig using the Zoo Tools retargeting system. Coming soon.
