This video will show you how to install the free Skin Wrangler script for Maya.

Skin Wrangler is a numerical skinning tool by Chris Evans and we have supported it through various Maya Upgrades. Skin Wrangler currently supports Maya 2020-2025.

1. Download the updated Skin Wrangler .zip from our GitHub Repository .

Code (Green Button) > Download Zip

2. Open your Maya/scripts directory. Use the python code below in the Script Editor to find your directory path.

Windows > General Editors > Script Editor > Python Tab

import os, sys, subprocess
import maya.mel as mel
directoryPath = os.path.abspath(os.path.join(mel.eval("internalVar -upd") , "../.."))
if sys.platform == "win32":
    os.startfile(directoryPath)
else:
    opener = "open" if sys.platform == "darwin" else "xdg-open"
    subprocess.call([opener, directoryPath])
print("Maya Preferences Directory Path: ", directoryPath)

3. Unzip the folder to the Maya/scripts directory found with the code above. Example:

username/Documents/maya/scripts/

4. Important: You must rename the folder “skinWrangler-master” to “skinWrangler”.

For example, the correct path would be:
username/Documents/maya/scripts/skinWrangler/ (skinWrangler_ui.py and other files here)

5. Start or restart Maya.

6. Open Skin Wrangler in the Zoo Tools Pro shelf:
