MAYA – SIMPLE BLOCKOUTS

The tutorials on this page will show you how to add complexity to your models by using the component modes, vertex, edge and face. You’ll also see how to use some simple modelling tools such as extrude and multi-cut.

This page follows the Primitive Model Walkthrough page, where we were limited to modifying objects.

You’ll see how to use simple tools to create more elaborate designs.

The modelling technique featured on this page is called “model blockouts”. This method uses modified primitives to intersect and rough out the model.

We recommend that you complete the Primitive Models and Component Basics pages before proceeding as they cover many of the concepts used here.

This goal of this page is to empower your vertex and edge loop tweaking techniques, enabling you to mold primitives into more interesting shapes.

We’ll still be intersecting shapes together here, but don’t worry joining techniques will be covered in later lessons. Its best to block out multiple models to get comfortable with simpler tools before migrating onto more advanced techniques.

01. MUSHY MODEL BLOCKOUT

Blockout model this Mushroom character using basic primitives.

Moving on from the primitive block models we can further refine our shapes by editing the components of the objects, vertices/edges and faces.

02. MUSHY RENDER IN ARNOLD

Render the mushroom model in Arnold.

03. JOY MODEL BLOCKOUT

Model blockout this joy character from primitives and using component selection (vertices/edges/faces) to refine the forms.

In this tutorial we’ll use further techniques for modelling the shape including extrude, multi-cut and the edge flow tools.

05. GIRAFFE MODEL BLOCKOUT

Model blockout this Giraffe character from primitives and using component selection (vertices/edges/faces) to refine the forms.

In this tutorial we’ll use further techniques for modelling including polySmooth and slide edge.

07. FROG BLOCKOUT – PART A

Model blockout this Frog character from primitives and using component selection (vertices/edges/faces) to refine the forms.

Part B of this tutorial blocks out the head, body arms and legs of the frog character.

In this demonstration we’ll also be tweaking vertices and edge loops and use some simple modelling tools like extrude and multi-cut.

08. FROG BLOCKOUT – PART B

Model blockout this Frog character from primitives and using component selection (vertices/edges/faces) to refine the forms.

Part B of this tutorial shows how to detail the character by building the toes, tweaking the face, and adding the nostrils and warts.

We’ll include techniques like bridge and other simple modelling tools along with vert and edge loop tweaks.
